Moving to SOA

By David Sprott

Abstract: Service Oriented Architecture or SOA is the subject of the moment. It's a great idea, to publish a portfolio of services from the existing application base that can be easily reused by existing and new applications without invasive activity in the source application. But many enterprises are finding it's not as straightforward as slapping loose coupled interfaces onto existing applications and legacy code. Genuinely adaptable architectures need a little more thought. In this report we examine the issues in moving to SOA.

To the extent that the components of business are off-the-shelf services, then the business attention switches to the configuration of the business process. If we are going to talk about components, whatever they are, we've also got to talk about the relationships and interactions and collaborations and connections between components, the "glue" or "wiring". In plugging together a component based business, we need to pay attention to the interfaces between the business components - in other words the business relationships.
